Massive List of Creepy Books to Read This October!

Massive List of Creepy Books to Read This October!

Break out the pumpkin spice and Hocus Pocus, kids, because it’s almost OCTOBER! October is definitely my favorite month- the weather, the changing leaves, football season, playoff baseball, my birthday…And best of all, Halloween! And to me, there’s no better way to get in the fall spirit than by curling up with a genuinely spooky book.

Here’s a massive list of spooky books to help you get in the mood. Some are unsettling, some are haunting, and some will downright scare you. Happy reading!

Pet Semetary | Stephen King | This one is seriously twisted. A family relocates from the city to rural Maine, only to find that the home they bought shares land with a mysterious burial ground. This story is so demented that King himself considered not publishing it. (Recommended on audio- it’s narrated by Michael C. Hall aka Dexter!)
Amazon

Kin | Kealan Patrick Burke | The only survivor of a brutal massacre and a group of trauma survivors return to the scene of the crime to make the responsible cannibalistic killers pay. Not for the faint of heart!
Amazon

Out | Natsuo Kirino, Translated by Stephen Snyder | A woman who was abused by her husband for years decides to exact her own revenge and enlists in the help of her co-workers to bury the evidence. A “Thelma and Louise kind of graveyard humor” set in Tokyo. Sold.
Amazon

Naomi’s Room | Jonathan Aycliffe | A newlywed couple gets ripped from their privileged existence when their only child disappears. True psychological suspense with a haunted twist.
Amazon

A Head Full of Ghosts | Paul Tremblay | A family gets torn apart when one daughter begins to show signs of schizophrenia. Or, is it possession? I loved the way this was told- from the viewpoint of the younger sister who is being interviewed for a book. This is on the short list of books that actually scared me.
Amazon

The Troop | Nick Cutter | A boy scout troop goes camping in the Canadian wilderness, when a sick and hungry man infiltrates the group. This book is for those with a high tolerance for gore.
Amazon

A Noise Downstairs | Linwood Barclay | A professor stumbles upon a couple disposing of a body and his normal life gets turned upside down. Normally well adjusted, he becomes increasingly unraveled as be starts to suspect his vintage typewriter is typing by itself at night. This one is less gory that the other recommendations on this list, but is just as unsettling.
Amazon

The Grip of It | Jac Jelemic | Slow building, literary horror about a young couple who, in their quest for a fresh start, inadvertently purchase a haunted house. This one’s moody, atmospheric, and a little weird- perfect for this time of year.
Amazon

Let the Right One In | John Ajvide Lindqvist | In early 80s Sweden, a small town is in an uproar when the body of a boy is found to have been drained of its blood. This translated story is traditional vampire lit at its finest.
Amazon

Brother | Ania Ahlborn | For a truly horrifying experience, look no further than Brother. A teen from Appalachia is desperate to break away from his family’s horrifying traditions. He tries to have a normal life, but the rest of the family are all too happy to make him remember who they are.
Amazon

The Nightmare Within | Glen Krisch | I read this book waaay back in 2011 and the story still sticks with me. A man has the unique ability to bring people’s nightmares nightmares into the world by pulling them from their heads. He creates a museum of dreams and nightmares, but unfortunately, the nightmares don’t like to stay put. A really unique and disturbing pick from an indie publisher.
