TBR & TBD | New and Noteworthy February 2017
Welcome to February! January seemed like such a big month for new releases... I swear I've added at least 10 new books to my list. But... never too many on that TBR list, right? Here are a couple of February releases that I have my eye on.
TBD 1 | FEBRUARY | A PIECE OF THE WORLD | CHRISTINA BAKER KLINE | RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 21ST, 2017
Whoo hoo! Another Christina Baker Kline book. Baker Kline wrote Orphan Train, a book I enjoyed a couple of years back that told the story of a young girl who is aging out of the foster system and the elderly woman she's been assigned to assist. Baker Kline did a great job mixing fiction with fact, and A Piece of the World comes from a similar. Here, a small town girl with a lifelong illness becomes the unlikely subject of a world famous painting. In my experience, the author is very skilled at bringing true events to modern day and I have high hopes that this one will have the charm of Orphan Train.
TBR 2 | To Catch a Killer | Sheryl Scarborough | Release Date: February 7th, 2017
YA is generally not my thing, but for some reason To Catch a Killer has caught my attention this month. The book is about Erin Blake, who has become a household name after her mother's murder. She was an infant and was by her mother's side for 3 days before she was found, and the case is still unsolved. The book takes place 10 years later, when Erin is again present the scene of a murder. This time she finds the body of her Biology teacher, and Erin is inspired by her FBI uncle to follow the clues and to try and solve the murder with the help of her longtime crush. I think that's got me the most interested in this one is that it's YA, but also a thriller. I love to see more for young adults outside of the fantasy and romance genre. #NotThatTheresAnythingWrongWithThose, it's just always nice to see something different.
TBD | Illusion of Justice: Inside Making a Murderer and America's Broken System | Jerome F. Buting | RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 21st, 2017
If you are in possession of interest in true crime and a Netflix account, then I don't doubt that you were into Making a Murderer at some point last year. I was so into that docuseries and tore through the episodes in about a week, appalled by the mishandling of the case, assumptions that were made, and the reminder of the abject corruption that exists within the American criminal justice system. Illusion of Justice is written by Jerome Buting, one Stephen Avery's defense attorneys. Buting has spent the bulk of his career working as a public defender and in the Innocence Project, overturning wrongful convictions. I'm thinking this book will be a combination of Jeffrey Toobin's The People Vs. OJ Simpson and Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy. I really hope Buting uses the success of Making a Murderer to bring insight into America's broken penal system.
