What to Read this Labor Day Weekend
Summer is coming to a close and oddly, I’m ready. I know we have three weeks until it’s official, but I’ve already had my first pumpkin coffee for the year so I’ve transitioned. I hope that you have some extra time off for your Labor Day weekend, and if you’re in the path of Hurricane Dorian that you stay safe!
These long weekend reading posts are some of my favorites to write. I’ve got some great recommendations- some I’ve read and loved and others are picks that I’ve been hearing great things about- but if you do find yourself with time to pick up a new book I hope these help you choose! All of these were published in 2019 and are available now.
Here are my top 8 binge-worthy picks.
My Friend Anna | Rachel DeLoache WIlliams | This is the perfect mashup of a memoir and true crime. The author is telling her story of her brief friendship with Anna Delvey, a supposed trust fund socialite that managed to con her friends and banks out of over $250,000. This was like a bougie car crash; I couldn’t tear myself away.
Ayesha At Last | Uzma Jalaluddin | This is billed as a modern day Pride and Prejudice retelling with Muslim characters, but I thought it had a lot more going for it than that. Ayesha and Khalid meet and immediately misunderstand and dislike each other. This is a non-traditional enemies to lovers story rife with family drama and food. It’s about balancing your family’s wishes with your own and superbly toes the line between thought provoking and fun.
The Gifted School | Bruce Holsinger | If I didn’t have ARCs to get to, this is what I would be reading. It’s the perfect story to really get you in the mood for back to school- a group of parents backstab and manipulate one another to make sure their their kid has a spot in the coveted, new gifted school that just opened up in their area. I live for petty drama!
The Arrangement | Robyn Harding | Behold- a rare 2019 suspense novel that isn’t terrible! A young woman who’s struggling to make it gets into a relationship with a sugar daddy, but inadvertently falls in love. He never has had any intention of leaving his wife, and her obsession ends with someone being killed. Ok, so this pick has not been vetted by me yet, but so many of my trusted sources (Renee, Dennis, and Larry) rated it high so I’m feeling good.
Tell Me Everything | Cambria Brockman | Boarding School. Secrets. Drama. And murder. This is a character driven novel of suspense unlike any of the other popular “thrillers” out there. No out of left field shocker twists here- just the a slow decline of once intense relationships as they try to transition into the real world.
The Nine | Jeanne McWilliams Blasberg | A woman who had feared she would never become a mother turns nurturing her son into her life’s purpose. When he gets accepted into a prestigious boarding school, she knows all of her hard work has been worth it, no matter the cost. When Sam uncovers evidence of sexual misconduct that the people in charge would prefer to hide, he risks jeopardizing his place in the school and his relationship with his mother to set things right.
Necessary People | Anna Pitoniak | This is a pick for those of you who like stories with drama and rich people problems. This is a delicious little book about ambition, status, and work ethic set against the backdrop of a cable news network. It’s about competing with your friends and fighting for the life you worked for- no matter the cost.
The Passengers | John Marrs | Oh, the drama! This one makes the list thanks to #Bookstagram, but damnit if the premise doesn’t sound enticing. Manual cars are in the process of being outlawed- only self-driving cars with humans as “passengers” will exist. That is, until a mysterious hacker gets into the system and threatens to crash eight of these cars into each other, killing the passengers. Sounds far fetched, but the reviews were good enough to get me to put it on my reading list.
